2 Tim 1:7 “for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”
St Augustine said “Love God and do whatever you please: for the soul trained in love to God will do nothing to offend the One who is Beloved.”
There are aspects of a surrendered heart and will that can look more like determinism or they can look like free will. Full determinism, in my view, is a misunderstanding of God’s will.
Case in point. The common question posed “Where should I go to college?”
Will God tell you directly where you should go to college? Will he make only one college available to you by closing other doors? Will he give you several possibilities?
The question begins with a question about what God wants from you but ends in a need to follow him regardless of where you go to school. A healthy question might look like, will this environment help me grow in my faith?
Sometimes God speaks on where exactly he wants us but sometimes God gives you options and lets you choose. If God tells you what to do, do it. If God doesn’t tell you what to do, put God first in whatever choice you make.
Pursue the fruits of the Spirit “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” as found in Galatians 5:22-23. And the greatest of these is love, that is, love of God.
